Where can I find an apartment roommate rental checklist?

Apartment Roommate Rental Checklist

Before making the final decision about your new rental and roommate, know what amenities are available to you as an apartment roommate. Here is a quick checklist for some of the most easily overlooked items:

  • Parking! Don't assume you will have convenient parking if you were not on the original lease. Many apartments assign parking space according to the original occupants so don't be surprised to find yourself taking a long hike if parking space is at a premium.
  • Gym or fitness center. Depending on the apartment complex, a roommate may or may not have full access to the fitness center. In most cases, if you are put on the lease then you should have full privileges, otherwise, there may be restrictions on use.
  • Pets. Just because your roommate has a pet doesn't mean they are allowed. Confirm the pet policy and find out in advance if there are required deposits or pet insurance obligations.
  • Visitors, family and friends. You might be thrilled that your sister is coming to visit for three weeks but the apartment complex might not. Check in advance how long visitors are allowed and be sure to ask about reduced rates on visitor suites.
  • Boats, RVs, motorcycles and other vehicles. Assume nothing. Your roommate might not even be aware of storage or parking restrictions on these large vehicles. If you have multiple vehicles or parking considerations then plan in advance.
  • Cable and Internet. You might only be moving across the block but that doesn't mean you can take your favorite cable, Internet or phone service with you. Many apartments have special deals that can save you money but it might also require you to change providers.
  • Age restrictions. Although not common, there are apartments specifically for those who are 50 years or older (others are 55, 60, etc...). If you are considering a roommate in an age restricted apartment then age will matter. Also, young visitors will typically be limited to 2 or 4 weeks of visitation time per year.
